Meet Janeen Kennamore, otherwise known as “Neen” by her teammates. A dog mom of Sassy, a 4-year old yorkie, Janeen lives in Fort Worth, TX, in her very own jungle oasis where she tends to over 100 house plants. When she’s not filling prescriptions for members across the country, she’s working on growing her own kale, mustard greens, and strawberries. We spoke with Janeen about a day in the life, her green thumb tips, and the “aha” moment when she realized health care is her calling.

Tell us about your path to the The Pill Club.

Growing up, I always wanted to be a doctor or a nurse, but I was squeamish about blood. I fell in love with chemistry in school, and that’s when I knew that I was going to make a career for myself in health care. Working in pharmacy turned out to be a good middle ground. I get to work in health care and play a critical role in supporting the patient care efforts of the pharmacy team. I’ve been working in this field for close to 15 years, and I love what I do!

Prior to joining The Pill Club, I worked in dialysis facilities and managed a variety of patient needs. The work ranged from fulfilling medication refills and navigating insurance questions to ensuring continuity of care for patients so they kept up with their prescriptions after treatment. Building relationships with patients was one of the most rewarding aspects of that job.

When the clinic I worked at shut down, I was laid off. Several recruiters were brought in to help employees transition to other roles, and that’s where I first learned about The Pill Club. I’ve always been a feminist, so the opportunity to empower women and be part of a startup really resonated with me. We’re helping to prevent unwanted pregnancies, so it’s really rewarding to be part of a team that’s providing access to something so essential. On a personal level, I would have loved a service like The Pill Club when I was younger! Instead I had to go to the pharmacy or ask my mom to pick up my prescription.

What’s your day-to-day like as lead technician on the pharmacy team?

The majority of my job is filling the prescriptions—making sure we’re sending the right medication to the right patient at the right time. Quality is absolutely critical when you’re filling prescriptions, and we hold ourselves to the highest standard. After the prescriptions are filled, the pharmacist checks them, and then they’re released to the logistics team—this is the last mile, so to speak, where the prescription gets packed with our signature monthly goodies before going out the door. We’re a lean, but mighty team: we push out a few thousand prescriptions on a given day. We’re very proud of the fact that we’re able to turn most prescription requests around within 24 hours.

I’m so grateful for my team. They inspire me on a daily basis. I like to say that we make the magic happen because we always rise up to the challenge and get the job done. Being part of a company that’s empowering women to take control of their health—and their future—is the most fulfilling part of my job.

You have quite the plant collection, so we have to ask: what’s the best plant to get for someone who is just starting out with house plants? Definitely Pothos! They’re the easiest plants, and they grow fast. You can go without watering them for a couple of weeks and still get a free pass. I love them because they let you know when they’re thirsty—the leaves curl up so you know they need water. I love a plant that speaks to you when it needs something! If you’re a first-time plant owner, my advice: don’t overwhelm yourself, start slow, and add to your collection over time.
